Getting Experience as a Freelance Writer

Starting out as a freelance writer can be rough. You immediately find yourself caught in a catch-22. You want to gain experience, but it seems like no one wants to give you any unless you already have some! That’s a frustrating spot to be in, especially when you know you have it what it takes to make it as a writer if someone would just give you a chance.

The good news is you do not have to be perpetually stuck in that predicament. Here are 4 ways to get experience as a writer:

  1. Offer your services at a reduced rate. When you query a publication about writing gigs, send them a writing sample and offer to write at a reduced rate. Try to avoid offering your services for free. It can be tempting and a lot of people will tell you that you have to work for free at first, but I don’t think you have to. If your writing is worthwhile, you should be compensated for it.

  2. Don’t discount the experience you do have. Do you write your own blog, contribute to other blogs, assist in editing company press releases, or even put together your homeowner’s association newsletter? Those are all things that can be used to demonstrate your writing style, ability and experience.

  3. Publish writings yourself. By using sites like Associated Content, eHow, and Helium (just to name a few) you can publish your writing online, gain exposure and possibly make a little money.

  4. Sign-up on freelancing websites. You can offer your writing services and search for writing opportunities to apply for. I recommend starting with a couple of simple ones, like Fiverr or Tenyt. Both are great because you can quickly find gigs, make some money and get your name out there as a freelance writer.

A freelancer’s dream always seems to be the day when publishers are coming to them asking to have something written. Who wouldn’t love that? It’s not impossible to get there; it simply takes dedication and hard work. The most important thing you can do is be proactive in seeking out opportunities and promoting yourself as a freelance writer. You might not have it yet, but an impressive portfolio and a reputation to go with it are completely within your reach.
