TopCoder is a contest based freelance marketplace which features design and development contests. With a community of more than 250,000 freelance service providers, TopCoder should be a good platform to get things done. However, at the time of writing there was only 1 open design contest, and less than 100 open programming contests. The concept is ok, but TopCoder is a shining example of how hard it is becoming to compete viably in the online outsourcing space. With so many other well financed alternatives out there, we think TopCoder are struggling to make their mark on the sector.
For Freelance Providers
Having reviewed the TopCoder website, we aren't completely sure how it works. Its confusing and reliable information on the terms, benefits and income potential is scarce.
For Buyers
Information is a little sketchy. We will try to find time to dig through the chaff that is their website and actually explain they key strengths and weaknesses in simple terms. For now, we don't have the time or energy - and we think neither will you - which is why the platofrm seems to be failing in attracting anything like the volume of jobs it needs to thrive and survive.
Our Verdict
TopCoder either doesn't explain what they do well enough, or don't do what they do well enough. Either way there is a diverse and rich pool of alternatives who are more popular, more succinct and more successful. Our tip of the day for TopCoder is to move along to one of the top outsourcing websites where you have a better chance of success.
