What is WhichLance? WhichLance? is a comparison site and B2B empowerment portal focused on providing information, reviews and debate surrounding the full gambit of websites serving the freelancing, offshoring, outsourcing and nearshoring community worldwide. The main focus of the site is the directory of freelancing websites, which is underpinned by user ratings and reviews ensuring a broad spectrum of people are able to participate in our community and provide feedback on their experiences and encounters of the websites we list.
Who is behind the website? WhichLance? was founded by Saif Bonar, a freelance consultant, entrepreneur and founder of several small businesses. Saif has over 14 years experience of working in web design, web development, online marketing and project management. For much of that time he has used a variety of freelancing and outsourcing websites to both buy services (Employing Freelancers) and sell his own skills. This tacit knowledge of how the freelance marketplaces operate and which are most favourable puts Saif in a strong position to take WhichLance? where it needs to go.
Why does it exist? We had toyed with the idea of launching something like this for several months, but it was always on the back burner. Ultimately, there are numerous reasons why WhichLance? has been launched.
First and foremost, there is nothing like it on the market, we are unique, the first in the market.
Additionally, there is a growing stable of freelancing websites, with fresh ones cropping up all the time. There are major variations in the fees charged by the freelancing websites and the quality of work provided by freelancers.
Some sites are good for buyers, some are good for freelancers - the best are good for both! Some sites are frequented by employers eager to over-exploit their workforce and pay unreasonably low rates, while others attract fair and honest employers who pay well, provide bonuses and are using freelancing websites for the long-term. Some marketplaces are good for low-level work while others are more suited tospecialist and high-end projects. Some freelance sites deliver good results for employers with professional bids and conscientious freelancers, while others seem to attract a wealth of amateurs and timewasters.
WhichLance? aims to cut through the crap and arm both employers (buyers of services) and Employees (freelancers and outsourcing businesses) with the tools and information required to make informed decisions about which freelance marketplace is most suited to their requirements.
Another key goal of WhichLance? is to raise awareness of freelancing and offshoring services such as Elance, Odesk, Guru, Freelancer and the rest of the sites we list to enable more people to benefit from the lower overheads associated with outsourcing and the better way of life offered by working as a freelance provider.
Where is WhichLance? located and where does it operate? Based in London, UK, the website is global. The current focus is on English speaking offshoring, outsourcing and freelancing websites. In time we hope to introduce information on freelance marketplaces speacialising in niche geographical regions and languages including Hispanic, Arabic, French and Russian freelancing websites.
When was the site launched? Which Lance was founded on 19th February 2010! We are still a baby and hope to grow our community exponentially throughout 2010 and become a force to be reckoned with in the Outsourcing, Offshoring, freelancing and nearshoring community.
Why should I use WhichLance? Because it will save you time and could save you money!
There are dozens of freelance marketplaces, all of them with their own strengths and weaknesses. All sites have a different fee structure, different feedback and ratings systems and different levels of security, protection and guarantees for buyers. WhichLance cuts through the small print and highlights the key strengths and weaknesses of each of the sites we feature.
How much does it cost? The WhichLance.com service is completely free for buyers and providers to use, you can review our listings, read our resources and guides and provide feedback on your experiences with freelance marketplaces at no cost.
So, how do you make your money? We are paid a referral fee or commission from many of the sites listed on WhichLance.com, this varies from site to site and sometimes its based on simply sending a visitor to the site, other times we get paid once a project has been posted by a buyer or won by a provider and then completed and paid for. We also run banner advertising on the site and in time will introduce a monthly newsletter, which may also run advertising, sponsorship or other paid for promotions.
I thought you said you were independent? We are. Although we make money from referring people to the freelance marketplaces, this will not be allowed to sway our decision on which sites are included or excluded from the directory or the recommendation, ratings, or reviews which we publish. the editorial side of the website and the directory are totally independent and advertisers cannot pay to be included or pay to have a competitor excluded. If a provider offers generous referral fees, but provides a crap service we will still tell it like it is - and so will our users in the forums!
