Founded in Sweden in 2004, Freelancer.com (formerly Getafreelancer.com) is one of the top players in the online outsourcing market today. It was bought in 2009 by an Australian company and has grown quickly. As of February 2010, jobs paid through the site amounted to $50 million. Freelancer.com is a favorite platform of qualified professionals from countries with lower scale salaries, for whom the fees charged at some other sites can be a turnoff. Its also a favourite from those in Europe and North America that want their job done on the cheap. Boasting one of the widest varieties of online job category listings, Freelancer hit 1.5 million users on April 9th, 2010.

For Buyers
The site offers a free trial for new buyers willing to post a job. After the free trial, buyers are charged an initial $5 fee for posting a project. The sum is refunded on selecting a provider and the buyer is then charged 3% of the total project value.

For Providers
Its free to register and bid for jobs, but freelancers must pay 10% commission on any successfully completed project. This is over and above the 3% which buyers are made to pay - this combination makes Freelancer one of the more expensive marketplaces. To mitigate this, frequent users can pay $19.95 per month for Gold Membership which reduces the project commission to only 3% - the lowest by far among the top sites.

Safety
Freelancer offers a smooth escrow system which protects both buyers and providers. Discrepancies are solved through an equally smooth dispute resolution system.

Our Verdict
Since you don't have to pay anything unless you're getting paid, Freelancer.com is a favorite with job seekers everywhere. Because it attracts people who are able to offer quality work at competitive rates, buyers are also instantly drawn to it. The site and system work like a charm, and their support service is extremely reliable.

Buyer Tip
You can invite people to bid on your projects, based on qualifications, location, and user ratings.

Provider Tip
It is advisable to use the Escrow system with first-time buyers, every time. In case of disputes, it will always help to copy all correspondence with the buyer to Freelancer.

Amazing review whiclance! I saw the details of your review and it surely is accurate because I myself can say that it really is good for people who seek jobs. I personally like their system and how it works compare to other that has some problems with their own system. But of course all will depend on your rating that is based on my own experience.

Freelancer is a joke. There are apparent great jobs on freelancer and also alot of jobs for $1. The worst customer service. You can't call them. You can't mail them. They won't call you. Email and chat the only way and it's like talking to a wall. You can't find their corporate people. There's no interface wth other users. It took me 3 months to get a financial error on their part removed. It can take almost a month to get your first payment. They tell you work is funded and you do the work ... then they tell you "oh the client's money was no good". A week after you've done the work. After the project was escrowed. Constant runaround and very disappointed. But it made me appreciate Elance that much more.

Hi we are a totally virtual business – we operate online selling party supplies each of our people don’t live or work near each other. Using freelancer.com has been key to growing our brand and using the internet for much of our communications means we are now a team – but a virtual team. Using the site has been a godsend because its so cheap to get anything done!! Their freelancers in SEO have been marvellous to get traffic to our site. When we started working together we were getting about 20 or 30 orders per day. Now we’re up to 400 and some days double that!

I'd looked at a few sites, such as rentacoder but Freelancer was by far the best - it was user-friendly and had a structure that ensured I was protected.

Contrary to some other comments, I have found some excellent and affordable writers on Freelancer for both SEO article writing and News copy-writing.

The freelancer.com site is fairly easy to use. It has an intuitive interface, an escrow option, and sufficient information available - if you dig around - on both providers and buyers. My only real gripe is buyers' expectations, at least in the Writing and Translation area (where I bid). If you're only prepared to pay peanuts, you can't realistically expect to attract quality writers. You might get lucky, sure, because there are SOME excellent writers in countries where English isn't the first language and cost of living is low, but this is not standard. I do not even waste my time bidding on jobs that will end up paying me less than $20/hour, and frankly, that's already a compromise I'm taking because I'm still establishing my reputation as a writer and editor. I love this work, and I fully intend to earn a living from it, but earning less than 25% of what I'm accustomed to being paid per hour is already ludicrous. If buyers insist on asking for "native English writers ONLY" to write 300 articles for $500, the only attention they'll get from me - and other competent native English writers - is a derisive laugh. You get what you pay for!

I have just used freelancer to post a project for the first time. It was a writing job and I got about 20 applications. Of those about 4 could write English to any reasonable standard. I provided a paid trial task to 2 applicants over a week ago and have heard nothing but excuses from them since. If you need quality writers, this is not the place to find them!
